Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should my child see a psychiatrist?
There's no specific age β it depends on what your child is experiencing. Some children benefit from evaluation as early as age 6-7, while others first seek care as teenagers. If you notice persistent changes in mood, behavior, school performance, or social withdrawal lasting more than a few weeks, evaluation can help clarify what's going on. Early care often prevents symptoms from worsening.
Will my teen be on medication?
Medication is one tool β not the only tool. After evaluation, we discuss what we found and explore treatment options together. Therapy, skills-building, family support, and lifestyle changes are often effective. If medication is recommended, we explain why, start with the lowest effective dose, monitor closely, and adjust based on how your teen is doing. You're always in control of treatment decisions.
My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. What can I do?
That's very common. Teens often feel defensive about mental health care, especially if they didn't choose it. A good approach: explain why you're concerned (specific changes you've noticed), validate their feelings ('I know this feels uncomfortable'), and frame it as support rather than punishment. Sometimes scheduling an evaluation without the pressure of long-term 'therapy' helps. Many teens feel better after one appointment and want to return.
What if my teen is in crisis?
If your teen is expressing suicidal thoughts, talking about harming themselves, or showing dangerous behavior, contact emergency services (911) or go to the nearest emergency room. You can also call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988). After stabilization, we can help with ongoing psychiatric care and safety planning.
Can I attend appointments with my teen?
Yes. We recommend an initial joint appointment so we understand the family context. During follow-ups, depending on your teen's age and preference, we may do combined sessions or individual time with your teen plus a separate parent update. Confidentiality is important β teens need to feel safe sharing β but we keep parents informed of major concerns and progress.
Do you accept insurance for adolescent services?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans including Medicare, Oscar Health, Aetna, United Healthcare, Humana, and many others. Self-pay rates and membership plans are also available for uninsured teens. Call (305) 209-0001 to verify coverage for your specific plan.
