Anxiety disorder treatment pairs skills-based talk therapy β most often cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) β with medication classes such as SSRIs or SNRIs when symptoms are strong, and most people who stay with treatment feel noticeably calmer within weeks to a few months. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in the United States, affecting nearly 1 in 5 adults in a given year according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Whether it's constant worry that won't switch off, dread of social situations, or physical tension you can't shake, effective anxiety treatment exists β and you don't have to figure it out alone. At Viva Centers in Doral, our bilingual (English/Spanish) behavioral health team treats anxiety disorders for adults across Miami-Dade, in the language you think in.
The Anxiety Disorders We Treat
We treat the full range of adult anxiety disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) causes persistent, hard-to-control worry about everyday things, usually with muscle tension, poor sleep, and fatigue. Social anxiety disorder brings intense fear of being judged, making meetings, dating, or even phone calls exhausting. Other people experience phobias, health-related anxiety, or anxiety mixed with panic attacks. The conditions differ, but they share one feature: an alarm system stuck in the 'on' position. Treatment works by retraining that alarm β and it works across the whole spectrum.
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) β chronic worry with tension, restlessness, and poor sleep
- Social anxiety disorder β intense fear of judgment in social or performance situations
- Panic-related anxiety β sudden surges of fear with strong physical symptoms
- Specific phobias β outsized fear of particular places, animals, or situations
When Worry Needs Treatment
Everyone worries; not everyone has an anxiety disorder. Consider treatment when worry or fear is frequent, feels out of proportion, and interferes with sleep, work, or relationships β or when you've started avoiding places, people, or tasks to keep anxiety at bay. Physical signs count too: a racing heart, stomach trouble, headaches, and jaw or shoulder tension are common ways anxiety shows up in the body. Avoidance brings short-term relief but makes anxiety grow, so earlier treatment is easier treatment. If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988 β the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available any time.
Your Anxiety Evaluation in Doral
Anxiety treatment starts with understanding your anxiety. At our Doral clinic, new-patient visits run a full 60 minutes so your clinician can hear the whole story: what triggers the worry, how it affects your body, what you've tried, and what you want back. We use validated screening tools and review sleep, caffeine, and medical history, since thyroid conditions and other issues can mimic anxiety β our on-site CLIA-certified lab can run same-day tests when needed. Visits are fully bilingual. The team is led by Medical Director Oscar Ortega, MD, with behavioral health provider Larisa Perez-Isasi, ARNP.
How We Treat Anxiety: Therapy, Medication, and Skills
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold-standard treatment for anxiety disorders: it teaches you to catch anxious thought patterns, test them against reality, and gradually face what you've been avoiding until it loses its grip. When symptoms are moderate to severe, medication helps therapy work β SSRIs and SNRIs are the first-line classes for ongoing anxiety, started low and adjusted slowly. Daily skills matter too: paced breathing, scheduled worry time, limiting caffeine, and regular movement all lower the body's baseline alarm. Most plans combine two or three of these, tailored to you.
- CBT with exposure β the most proven therapy for anxiety disorders
- SSRIs β first-line medication class for ongoing anxiety
- SNRIs β an alternative first-line class, helpful when tension or pain is prominent
- Calming skills β breathing techniques, worry scheduling, caffeine limits, and exercise
What to Expect β and How to Get Started
Treatment is gradual, not instant. Therapy skills often bring relief within the first few sessions; anxiety medications typically take 2 to 6 weeks to reach their effect, so we schedule early follow-ups to adjust the plan and track progress with the same tools we used at your evaluation. Many follow-ups can happen by telehealth. We accept most major insurance plans, including Oscar, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Medicare Advantage, and Ambetter; same-day appointments are often available, and Saturday visits can be arranged by appointment. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable β most people get substantially better, and stay better with maintenance skills.
